Punk IPA (1 of 1001)

Rating: 3.75

An altogether new beer for me here, Brewdogs Punk IPA first brewed in Scotland in 2007. BrewDog is Scotland’s biggest independently owned brewery & Punk IPA is their main brand.  Described as “a hoppy and powerful ale in the American style” this will be the first beer for the ‘1001 Beers’ list I will be trying & reviewing for this blog & is a beer I am looking forward to trying for the first time.

Appearance (4/5): Pours a light gold colour with a larger white bubbly head that slowly goes down. Slightly carbonated & not to bad looking.
Aroma (7/10): A malty smells, rather sweet with hints of pine.
Taste (7/10): Sweet with hops coming through to start with leaving a rather bitter aftertaste.
Palate (4/5): Thin to medium bodied & quite smooth. Bitter on the palate

Overall (15/20): Has a pretty good balance but was slightly too bitter for my liking. Decent overall but perhaps I was maybe a little too eager to try this one.

first time i tried it i was knocked back by the bitterness but you keep going back to it, its addictive in a way. the new version is less hoppy and bitter, not sure i’m convinced its better.

The first time I tried this (above) I wasn’t it’s biggest fan but I’ve since come to love it. Along with Sierra Nevada pale ale & Duvel, it is probably the beer I buy the most.
