Zlatý Bažant 12° (23 of 1001)

Rating: 3.0

Time for a beer I knew absolutely nothing about prior to read about it in the 1001 Beers book. Before departing on a recent trip to Slovakia I carried out some research & the beer seemed to receive okay reviewed online & was rated as one of the countries better lagers. Not as well known as beers from its neighbour to the east the Czech Republic, Slovakia beers are a mystery to me & prior to visiting I would have struggled to name even one. Primarily exported to other ex-Iron Curtain countries, Zlatý Bažant 12° is unknown in the United Kingdom even though it is a definite step up from the majority of pale lagers available here.

Appearance (3/5): Light golden amber in appearance with a bubbly two-finger sized head that settles to a thin lacing around the glass. There is some bubbles rising to the surface although not many.
Aroma (6/10): A combination of grassy hops & citrus was masked somewhat but a skunky main aroma. Quite bland in general although not really unpleasant.
Taste (7/10): Quite a standard pale lager/pilsner that was a rather bland affair with the slightest of skunky tastes coming from the pint. The taste also hinted at some grassy hops, grain & citrus/lemon although this again was masked for the most part.
Palate (3/5): A light pilsner with a semi smooth texture that goes down incredibly easy & tingles the tongue ever so slightly.

Overall (10/20): A pretty average pilsner in my opinion although it does go down very easy & works wonders as a session beer. It is not as nice as those from its Czech neighbour & had a slight skunky aroma/taste although it was highly drinkable & probably one that I would purchase again if the price was right.
