Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier

Rating: 4.05

Now for a new style to me, a kristalweizen which is basically a filtered version of the hefeweizen style of wheat beer that I am quite familiar with. This one is from the worlds oldest brewery, Weihenstephaner, with opened in 1040 & this particular beer is a filtered & lighter version of their own hefeweizen beer from 1933. Their hefeweizen is featured in the 1001 Beers book along with two other beers from the brewery that hopefully I will be able to try soon. This kristalweizen should be quite easy on hops & very light and is one I suspect will be quite to my liking.

Appearance (4/5): Very clear & light yellow in appearance with a nice, pinky sized white head that holds well thoughout & leaves some gentle lacing. Pretty good all round here
Aroma (8/10): Almost identical to Hoegaarden in smell with a nice banana & coriander mix upfront along with cloves and possibly melon or lemon in the background.
Taste (8/10): Great tasting and again much like Hoegaarden or perhaps my previously reviewed Erdinger Weissbier in taste. A nice blend of coriander, spiced clove & citrus fruits mirroring the smell quite well. There is also some banana in there too.
Palate (4/5): Nice, crisp & refreshing to drink with a nice, light fizz that makes you come back for more. Quite a light beer but that isn’t a negative here and makes this easily drinkable & smooth beer.

Overall (17/20): A very nice beer in the style of Hoegaarden and generally very pleasant. Very well balanced & flavourful with a smooth finish, nothing negative about this one. I will be purchasing a few more of these real soon.
