77 Lager

Rating: 3.5

Launched in 2009 to replace existing Brewdog lagers, 77 Lager is described on the bottle as a “juxtaposition pilsner”. In typical Brewdog fashion the bottle also talks of how lager is for the most part a boring, predictable style were “there is no longer magic to be found in this bland, mass produced, cheaply sourced and watered down concoction”. This rant is one that I agree with & am forever a fan of Brewdog for doing something about this. I’ve yet to be disappointed by one of there beers. Even though Rip Tide was not to my liking I still appreciated it for what it was, a finely made beer. This is a beer that I am looking forward to trying. One thing to not on this beer though is that it’s not your typical Brewdog fare in that it try nothing special & is just a safe, but still very nice lager. One that will appeal to typical lager drinkers as well as people who appreciate a good beer.

Appearance (4/5): Golden coloured with a very nice, bubbly head that has okay retention. It settles to a finger sized head with some nice lacing. It is clear & still in the glass.
Aroma (7/10): Quite well balanced and very hoppy in smell. There is some grain like aroma in there too along with some citrus and herbs as well. Very nice, especially for a pilsener.
Taste (7/10): I felt this one tasted similar to Punk IPA in some respects, particularly with the pine like taste upfront and the hoppy bitterness that immediately follows. Very nice at the start although somewhat subdued in the finish, yet still a very nice beer.
Palate (3/5): Crisp in the finish although perhaps slightly too dry. It is smooth & highly drinkable and quite pleasant.

Overall (14/20): Quite unlike every other pilsener I have tried but in this case different is good. I enjoyed it a lot & is certainly one I’ll come back to in the future although the fact that I felt it was similar to Punk IPA in a number of ways leaves me thinking I’ll probably choose that over this one more often than not. Still worth a try & a beer that I recommend you try.
