Meantime Wheat

Rating: 3.55

In what will be my 100th beer review for this blog I felt it only fitting to go for my favourite style; a hefeweizen. I opted for an offering from Meantime brewery after trying & enjoying the same companies pilsner earlier in the month. “Using a genuine Bavarian strain to produce the characteristic banana, toffee & cloves aromas”, this beer will hopefully be an enjoyable one & one fitting of this 100th review. As mentioned in the review of the Meantime Pilsner, this is an excellent brewery with several highly rated beers, however their Wheat beer is not one of the six featured in the 1001 Beers list which leads me to believe that it may not be of the same quality as some of the German & other European offerings.

Appearance (4/5): A terrific golden orange colour that cloudy as expected. The lack of a good head was a slight disappointment, especially considering this is a wheat beer but it other than that it’s nice.
Aroma (8/10): A pleasant & unique combination of banana and toffee (from the hefeweizen’s I’ve sampled so far anyway) that works well together & is rounded off nicely with spices & cloves at the back. Refreshingly pleasant & well balanced.
Taste (7/10): The taste of wheat & banana make up the main flavours of this beer & work well without being outstanding. There is a nice hint of toffee in there too which is different whilst still tasting like a hefeweizen.
Palate (3/5): Plenty of fizz and carbonation to this one, it is light bodied but could do with being more crisp in the finish.

Overall (13/20): This was a nice, enjoyable hefeweizen but definitely not the best I’ve tried. It works on some levels but the alcohol content can be tasted through the banana flavouring, in addition to this the lack of a head was a real let down. Not one I would purchase again I don’t think but still a nice beer.
