Hofbräu Weisse

Rating: 3.95

Previously known as Kindl Hefe Weizen, the beer dates back as far as 1589 when the brewery was founded. The beer is noted for its “rich foam” as well as its unforgettable, refreshing taste”. The Hofbräuhaus in Munich was a location used by the Nazi Party to hold functions and declare policies. This alongside the beer make the Hofbräuhaus one of Munich’s most visited tourist attractions. Famous visitors in the past have included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and John F. Kennedy. For almost 200 years Hofbrauhaus held a monopoly on Weissbier production in Bavaria, when brewing wheat beers was reserved for a select few. This should mean that Hofbräuhaus should be one of the best wheat beers around, lets find out if that is the case.

Appearance (4/5): Looks an excellent hazy golden yellow colour with a large, foamy white head that eventually settles down to leave a thin, pinky sized cap on the pint. The beer has good carbonation with plenty of bubbles through the haze.
Aroma (7/10): Very much like your typical wheat beer with a banana aroma dominating although this is a quite clean smelling hefeweizen. There is a sort of cloudy, fruity smell and some spice too along with some lemon but it is a quite light smelling offering.
Taste (8/10):
Very much like the smell with the banana flavour being the most noticeable with the spice and lemon in the background. The banana taste is pretty good and there is also faint some herbal flavours. Generally pretty good and very drinkable.
Palate (4/5):
This one is on the light side of medium bodied and is really smooth. The carbonation is low for the style but it’s not off-putting. Very drinkable and great on a warm summers afternoon.

Overall (17/20): I really enjoyed this one having sampled it in Hofbräu beer garden in Munich on a warm day which may have helped my rating slightly. The beer went down really well and is definitely one I look forward to trying again at some point. Not the best hefeweizen I have ever tried but it is certainly up there.
