Spitfire Premium Kentish Ale

Rating: 3.75

Another new English Pale Ale for me to try now and potentially a real bargain at only £1 for a 500ml bottle from a local supermarket whilst on special offer. The beer has been brewed by the Shepherd Neame brewery since 1990 & was originally launched to mark the 50th anniversary of the Second World War’s Battle of Britain. Named after the famous British fighter jet of the same name from the battle, Spitfire is also the brewery’s biggest selling cask ale although I will be reviewing the bottle conditioned version this time around. The advertising of this beer is typically World War II themed, the beer has won a gold medal at the prestigious International Brewing Industry Awards & is featured in Michael Jackson 500 Classic Brews guide to beer, so £1 seems a bargain so far.

Appearance (5/5): Settles to a nice dark amber colour that is clear & relatively still in the pint tumbler. There is a massive white, frothy dome-shaped head that slowly reduces in size to leave finger sized, bubbly white head after about a minute.
Aroma (6/10): Sweet caramel notes are apparent from this beer upfront along with a nice biscuit smell too. There is a strong presence of summer fruits that could do with being less pronounced but is still a good one. The only negative aspect is the hints of grain & alcohol on the nose dotted around the smell.
Taste (7/10): Quite fruity upfront with some good citrus flavours thrown in for good measure. The bread and malts are nice too and the bitter finish is a clean one. This is about right for the style & a good example of it.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied with a solid, medium level of carbonation & a very smooth texture. The finish is very slightly dry but still goes down easily.

Overall (13/20): A solid all round beer it only slightly let down by the mild hints of grain & alcohol I detected on the nose. There is a nice, well-balanced fruity flavour to it and the finish is very nice making the beer an easy one to drink.
