Ayinger Bräu-Weisse

Rating: 4.35

Another offering from Ayinger here, what will be my second in a row & hopefully one that will be at least a slight improvement on the previous; Ayinger Lager Hell. A hefeweizen this time, which is a style I am a big fan of, and one that gets excellent reviews on the BeerAdvocate website so I imagine this will be a beer that I will enjoy. This is a beer that I have tried once before on-tap whilst in Munich and it is a beer that I really enjoyed at the time so hopefully it’ll taste just as good coming from the bottle. Again not a beer I am likely to find in the UK without a lot of effort so I plan to enjoy this one.

Appearance (5/5): A lot lighter than your usual hefeweizen, this one pours a yellowy gold colour that is capped off with a massive three-finger seized, foamy white head that has the excellent retention that I have come to expect from this type of beer. The beer itself is naturally cloudy & the beer looks very appealing.
Aroma (8/10): Smells of banana, cloves & also some lemon added in for good measure; a wonderful smelling beer that is much like most other hefeweizen. Very well balanced and quite sweet with hints of wheat and some malts. Excellent.
Taste (9/10): Matching the smell quite well here, there is a lot of banana & clove upfront coupled with wheat & some citrus too. Well balanced & easy to drink, there is a banana finish as well & some good hops feature also. Outstanding.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied, perhaps on the light side of medium though. The texture is pretty smooth throughout & is incredibly refreshing. Carbonation is also on the light side of medium; there is a great feel to this one.

Overall (17/20): What a beer! Even given that this is my favourite style of beer, I was still surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. It was extremely well balanced & the banana flavour at both the beginning & the end of the taste was excellent & matched the nose very well. I’m not hopefully but maybe I’ll get lucky and find this beer a little closer to home one day, not the absolute best hefeweizen out there but fantastic none the less.
