Chaos Theory

Rating: 3.5

Continuing the Brewdog theme is another new one for me, this time Chaos Theory which was winner of Brewdogs own in-house prototype competition back in  2008 & was added to the Brewdog portfolio the following year. I managed to try this one at Brewdogs bar in Glasgow’s West End last week & am pleased to say it didn’t disappoint. Described as a “deep copper, insanely hopped IPA” it was hardly a beer I wasn’t going to try & I’m glad I did. It was a good solid offering & which I had a few half pints of that evening, hopefully it won’t be the last time I get to sample it either.

Appearance (4/5): Amber coloured and clear with a finger & a half sized, foamy white head that has good retention. It manages to hang on for a couple of minutes as it very slowly reduces in size, leaving some nice lacing on the side of the glass.
Aroma (7/10): A sort of strange smelling beer on first impressions with a mix of pine like hops and a mild, tropical fruit aroma that is coupled with a malty smell. It’s rather sweet and pleasant, just unusual at the same time with a little bit of wheat and some floral notes thrown in for good measure.
Taste (7/10): The taste matches the smell but doesn’t seem as strong here with the hops and fruit aroma. It does however seem more bitter than the nose with the tropical fruit & pine flavours being followed up by a strong bitter presence and some sweet malts.
Palate (3/5): On the light side of medium which surprised me slightly as I thought it would have been heavier going with the 7.1% ABV although I did enjoy the weight & feel of this beer. It was smooth, a little dry & was rounded of by a quite bitter finish.

Overall (14/20): A nice, highly drinkable beer that I would compare to Punk IPA but with less hops & a little more bitter in the finish. It was a good beer but not Brewdogs best offering & one that could have done with being a little more complex perhaps.
