Midnight Sun (70 of 1001)

Rating: 3.55

Midnight Sun will be my sixth Williams Brothers beer, making them my second most prolific go to brewery when buying new beers behind Brewdog. This offering, labelled as a “rich, dark & spicy porter” was a regional gold medal winner at the 2010 Society of Independent Brewers awards and is made by adding a “wee bit of root ginger” into the mix as the bottle describes it. This is a bottle I have seen Tesco stores stocking for some time now amongst others & when I decided to buy a few bottles that featured in the 1001 Beers list on this blog, this one was one of the first bottles I picked up. It’s is a brewery I enjoy trying new beers from as the difference from one beer to the next can be so varied, I am already looking forward to picking up some more from them once I’ve worked my way through the beers I currently have in my cellar.

Appearance (3/5): Very dark, mahogany brown with a pinky sized, caramel brown head that is bubbly in texture and settles to a soapy lacing mainly around the circumference of the glass after about twenty seconds.
Aroma (7/10): Dark roasted malts, some coffee and a bit of toffee upfront from this one along with some roasted barely. The aroma is rounded off with some dark chocolate and a touch of spice.
Taste (7/10): Beginning with a strong coffee taste that is blended with some rich, dark malts and a sweet toffee flavour and a hint of spice somewhere around the middle. The is a creamy bitter finish and a little bit of ginger that was mentioned on the bottle.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied with fairly strong carbonation levels and with a rich, creamy smoothness to it and a slight tang to it and a dry finish.

Overall (15/20): Quite a nice, refreshing beer that went down pretty well and had a good creamy feel to it. The root ginger worked well and this is potentially a beer I would buy again although the dry finish might make these return visits few and far between.
