Broughton Scottish Oatmeal Stout (75 of 1001)

Rating: 2.55

One of the first beers from the Broughton Ales brewery that was founded in 1980 with this beer launching the following year. The brewery was one the the pioneers of the Brittish craft beer scene and after three decades of consistently brewing quality beer the brewery has eleven bottled beers & around six cask ales. This will be the second of their bottles I will have tried, following on from their Old Jock Ale that I reviewed here earlier this month that I found rather pleasant. I had been keeping an eye out for this particular beer for a few weeks now as it was one of the few remaining Scottish beers on the 1001 Beers list that I had yet to try, and after initially having little luck in a few major UK supermarkets I managed to find a bottle in Waitrose in Glasgows West End and quickly snapped it up. This will be my 75th beer from the 1001 Beers list so hopefully this one can continue the trend set by the last few beers from the said list which have been of excellent quality.

Appearance (4/5): Really dark, mahogany brown with a thin & bubbly, half-centimetre head that is light brown in colour with white tinges. Retention is pretty good with the head staying the same size throughout.
Aroma (6/10): A mix of dark, roasted malts and lighter coffee notes along with some dark chocolate to begin with. There is some grain and barely towards the end.
Taste (4/10): Dark malts, some milky coffee and a little roasted barely account for most of the taste here but not in a manner that I enjoyed. The finish was a bitter hops one.
Palate (2/5): Quite thin in body with a lot more carbonation than I would have preferred, it almost feels like I’m drinking a cola.

Overall (7/20): This beer was really disappointing to me, I didn’t find it particularly well balanced or flavourful. I found that it tasted pretty bad and there was far too much fizz to this one, I can’t see what all the fuss is about as received good reviews online.
