Old Scratch Amber Lager

Rating: 3.85

Quite a long name for a beer here, Flying Dog Old Scratch Amber Lager, or just Old Scratch from here on is one of a number of beers from the Flying Dog brewery that I have spotted on a few of my recent trips into Peckhams in Glasgow and this is mainly down to the brightly coloured and loud labelling used by the brewery. This one certainly grabbed my attention as it’s not a brewery I was familiar with beyond being able to identify a bottle of theirs in a police line-up. The other reason I went for this bottle over the others from Flying Dog was that I figured this would be something like Brooklyn Lager that I reviewed here earlier and fairly enjoyed. It is described and ‘malty and mellow’ and the fact it wasn’t simply a basic lager appealed to me as well. Hopefully this one is not just a pretty face and that it actually packs a punch too.

Appearance (4/5): A very nice dark orange to amber colour with a foamy white head that is about four centimetres tall and stays for about a minute before beginning to fade.
Aroma (7/10): Caramel and toffee on the nose with some muted rich malts and very faint alcohol. It seems a lot darker and richer than I was expecting but is a good smelling beer without being especially strong on the nose. There is an overall sweetness and touches of sugar to the beer.
Taste (8/10): Rich malts and toffee to begin with along with a touch of caramel; again this beer is richer and darker than expected but it is full of flavour. It is quite sweet with a lot of different malt flavours fighting to be noticed and a background malty bitterness, albeit a mild one.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and very sweet with a mildly bitter finish and good carbonation levels.

Overall (15/20): A good beer all round here, quite sweet and rich in taste with a much darker flavour than I had anticipated. I  really only have Anchor Steam Beer to compare it too in the California Common category but they both taste completely different to me, although both taste great. Very drinkable and a beer that I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled for in the future; grab a bottle if you spot it anywhere, you won’t regret it.
