Scottish Session

Rating: 3.0

Back to William Brothers again and what I think will be my eighth beer from the brewery. I managed to pick this bottle up for £1 from Morrisons about a fortnight again since it was one special offer and I thought I would grab it whilst it was in stock. I smelt it briefly when someone I know had a bottle, and that coupled with the fact that Williams Brothers often produce some quality beers. Going into this one I don’t imagine it will be anything spectacular but I can’t really argue with the price and it should at least be drinkable. A final note on this beer, apparently it is also labelled as Williams Gold in some regions.

Appearance (3/5): Very light golden yellow that almost borders on straw coloured but not quite. There is a thumb sized, bubbly white head with a fair bit of carbonation visible. The head retention is average to good, it stays for a minute or two but gradually declines in size from the get go.
Aroma (6/10): Light and fruity smelling with some nice citrus notes and grassy notes. There is a dry biscuit and malts smell too along with a hint of grain. Plenty of hops for the style and a nice, pleasant and summery aroma without really exciting.
Taste (6/10): Some grassy hops and hints of citrus that was present in the smell. There was a little to much grain in the taste upfront followed by a fruity hop taste. The finish is quite a dry one.
Palate (3/5): Light bodied, perhaps a little watery but not overly thin. There is good carbonation and a dry bitterness to round the drink off with.

Overall (12/20): Really just an average session ale here and not too different for numerous others out there. It was drinkable and the price certainly helped a little in my overall score, but only slightly. Even at a pound a bottle I doubt it’s a beer I’d pick up again in a hurry although it wasn’t by any means a bad beer, it simply wasn’t a memorable one either.
