Old Dan

Rating: 3.2

Surprisingly up until now I had only tried three beers from Thwaites with all of them picked up at Home Bargains and despite none of them scoring particularly highly I had still assumed I would have drank a lot more of their stuff. Like the previous three, Old Dan was purchased in Home Bargains about a six or seven weeks ago as it was the only beer in the shop I had yet to try and I didn’t fancy going home empty handed. Originally brewed back in 1957 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the brewery, this Old Ale is a permanent edition on the Thwaites roaster.  A relatively strong beer coming in at 7.4% abv, it is a beer I have been putting off drinking as I haven’t been the biggest fan of the Old Ale despite the fact it has produced a few excellent beers that I have reviewed here, most notably Old Engine Oil and Dark Island so maybe this one will add it’s name to the list.

Appearance (4/5): A deep caramel colour with a off-white to brown coloured, foamy head that has average retention and is about a thumbs width tall. The beer also has pretty good clarity.
Aroma (7/10): Some really strong malts off this one to begin along with a good amount of alcohol too.It is quite a sweet smelling beer with some dark fruits with some plum and perhaps a touch of burnt sugar.
Taste (6/10): Very sweet tasting and with a strong malt presence to go with it. There is a lot of alcohol in the taste but it isn’t off-putting and I also detect the plum and other fruits from the nose along with a definite licorice taste.
Palate (3/5): Medium bodied and very smooth and sweet to drink with an excessive alcohol taste in my opinion although it is a 7.4% beer and it wasn’t overly off-putting if truth be told.

Overall (10/20): A pleasant drink but one that has to be savoured without a rush, it was quite warming and rich although probably not a beer I’d have again. I also thought that at 7.4% the alcohol content could have been masked slightly better but still, it was a nice drink to try.
