Pan Zlatni

Rating: 3.0

A second ‘Pan’ beer from Croatia now, this one being the so called ‘Premium’ version of the previously reviewed Pan Lager than I wasn’t exactly raving about after trying it. Seeing as this one was slightly more expensive, and going by the name, then hopefully this one is an improvement on it’s predecessor although I’m not overly optimistic about it. I picked this one up at the same time as the normal version, whilst in Split for a couple of days earlier in the month and tried this one back at the hotel later the same day so I suspect that had I reviewed this one back in the UK it might very well have scored slightly worse than it did. Still it wasn’t the worst beer I tried over there & it was a big improvement on Pan Lager at least. One minor annoyance is that I never managed to get a picture of this one whilst I was drinking it.

Pan Zlatni

Appearance (4/5): A clear beer with a slightly darker than usual amber colour and a thumb sized, bubbly white head that stays quite well on the top of the beer, even managing to leave some lacing on the glass too.
Aroma (6/10): Some earthy lager hops and malts to begin with, quickly followed by some adjuncts and a touch of corn. I also detected some bread in there.
Taste (5/10): A malty lager taste to start with along with some light grain and a touch of lager like grassy hops. The beer tasted quite light on flavour but sadly it was also quite skunky too.
Palate (3/5): Thin and smooth on the palate with a strong amount of carbonation and a bitter, malty finish that is somewhat muted on the palate although not in a flat tasting way.

Overall (10/20): Not a great lager in my book, despite what the ‘premium’ on the bottle suggested.  It was darker in flavour than I had expected, especially considering it is a pale lager. It was certainly drinkable, I just felt it was too malty and didn’t offer much when it came down to it really which was a shame.
