Sarajevo Premium

Rating: 2.85

A second Bosnian beer now this one is the premium version of the previously reviewed Sarajevo Pivo, although this one is not quite as popular as the more widely known flagship beer from the Sarajevska Pivara. Despite the fact that the brewery was less than a five minute walk from our guest house in Sarajevo I never made the short trip to take a tour of the place although it is top of my to do list should I make a return trip, which I hope to at some point. This was a beer that I had a few times whilst out and about in the city and it just seemed to be your luck which version the two Sarajevska beers you got when you ordered in a restaurant. To be honest with you I preferred the standard version of the beer better but this one was not without its charm and was refreshing, particularly in July when the weather was well into the forties; somehow I can’t see this one being quite as good in the middle of winter though.

Appearance (3/5): Light yellow to a golden straw colour straw with a thumb sized foamy, white head that stays fairly well with only a small reduction in size.
Aroma (5/10): A light hop like aroma along with some basic malts and corn, there is also some bread and a mild, skunky bitterness to round things off with. Despite the name this one is quite basic on the nose.
Taste (6/10): Sweet overall with some light citrus and grassy hops blended together with a touch of lager malts thrown in for good measure. The finish was again quite light with a small amount of bitterness.
Palate (3/5): Quite light as the nose had first suggested, there was a nice refreshing taste and feel to the beer and just enough carbonation to make it enjoyable.

Overall (11/20): An average lager, straight down the middle and really a hot climate beer but one that you could drink at a push. It wasn’t a great beer, nor one that I could really recommend but it was nice for the summer and refreshing to a degree so I won’t complain too much.
