Evil Twin Yang

Rating: 4.1

This one is a huge beer, coming in at 10% abv. this is a bottle I picked up from the Brewdog.com online store around the end of July and thought it was a steal at under three pound for the bottle considering the strength of the beer and the fact it’s not that easy to find. From what I can guess it seems to be a sort of collaboration between Brewdog and Evil Twin Brewing or perhaps it is an Evil Twin beer that was brewed in Scotland at the Brewdog brewery; either way it’s not that easy to tell from the bottle or the Brewdog website. This is one half of a Black & Tan mix, the other being the Yin to this ones Yang however also available in bottle format is Yin & Yang which seems to be the two beers mixed together to save you doing it yourself I guess as I’m not sure I would really want to consider how much I enjoyed this one on its own.

Appearance (4/5): A cloudy and bright orange to red colour with some sediment in the glass and a thin, wavy foam head that borders on a thick lacing and sticks to the glass a little.
Aroma (8/10): A strong tropical fruit aroma up front and closely followed by some pine and grapefruit with touches of citrus, orange and from right out of left field, a little caramel as well. There is some good hop notes, a touch of spice and alcohol and closed out with some subtle malts. It’s not quite as in your face as I was expecting but it is a good one and very appealing.
Taste (9/10): Tropical fruits, apricot and orange mixed with a background alcohol taste and a lot of spice to begin with. There is a good hop character and lots of pine and grapefruit flavours along with some caramel and peach. There is a lot going on in this one but it is all very well-balanced and everything seems to work well together and complimented each other.
Palate (4/5): Full bodied and smooth with a nice alcohol burn and a fruity, sweet bitterness and creamy, slightly bitter finish and a good balance. The alcohol is noticeable but it doesn’t seem as strong as it is and is quite well masked.

Overall (16/20): This one was an excellent beer with a lot of depth and character and ended up being a lot easier to drink than I would have imagined. It was definitely a strong beer although I didn’t think it felt like a 10% one with at least some of the alcohol hidden and there being a good balance between flavours. Although not a beer I would have all that often, mainly due to the abv., it is a beer that I look forward to trying again at some point. I also look forward to trying the other half of this one, Ying not to mention the combination of other, Ying & Yan although I’m not sure how easy either of those will be to find.
