Rudoplh The Red Nosed White Horse Beer

Rating: 2.5

Another Christmas beer here and one that I picked up midway through December when I spotted it on offer for £1.50 in Morrisons whilst picking up a few other things. If it wasn’t a Christmas seasonal then it would have been a beer I would have avoided like the plague given the fact it came in a clear bottle and the label just looked cheap but given the time of year I picked up a bottle anyway; a decision I soon regretted upon trying it. Everything in the taste and smell also screamed at it being a cheap bitter and it’s not a beer I’ll be picking up next year should it appear in supermarkets again; they’d have to be given it away for me to be interested.

Rudoplh The Red Nosed White Horse Beer

Appearance (4/5): A deep copper amber with a huge, foamy white head on top that has good retention and doesn’t seem to reduce by anything noticeable over the first couple of minutes.
Aroma (4/10): Sweet with some darker malts and an earthy aroma to begin. There is some caramel but not a lot and toffee with a mix of some nondescript darker fruits, none of which was particularly pleasant or well balanced.
Taste (5/10): A typical bitter flavour to start with some strong earthy malts and a few hops, some light caramel in there and some darker fruits such as figs. It wasn’t a great flavour to be honest and was very bitter right at the end.
Palate (2/5): Light medium in body with about medium carbonation and a slightly watery feel as you swallow it. There is a lot of bitterness toward the end of the beer as well and the balance isn’t great and it is also very dry at the end.

Overall (8/20): A pretty sorry excuse for a Christmas seasonal here, not much thought or effort has went into this one and it comes across as a rather cheap and basic bitter that wouldn’t be given a second look the rest of the year and really shouldn’t now either. It’s not a beer I enjoyed and it was a real struggle to finish.
