Thornbridge Jaipur (154 of 1001)

Rating: 4.25

This one is a beer that I became aware of a good while ago but put off buying for one reason or another, mainly due to the fact I thought it would be just another run-of-the-mill, English style India Pale Ale, however when I spotted it for not that bad a price in the run up to Christmas I decided to bite the bullet since did feature on the 1001 beers list. When I finally got round to trying this one it turned out I was wrong, this one was definitely more of an American style IPA than English style and is much better a beer for it. I’ll be on the look out for more Thornbridge beers soon.

Jaipur

Appearance (5/5): Light amber with orange tinges and a very big, two fingers tall head that is part foamy, part bubbly looking and stays at about the same height for a few sips before reducing slightly in size.
Aroma (8/10): Smells a lot more like an America IPA than I had been expecting, mainly based on the breweries location and the fact it came in a 500ml bottle. It was quite strong to begin with plenty of pine hops coming through along with some citrus fruits, a lot spice and some floral hops along with plenty of tropical fruit notes. This one was a pleasant surprise on the nose with some pineapple, grapefruit and even some lychee making up the rest of the nose.
Taste (8/10):
This one is again quite hop filled on the taste buds with a good tropical fruit backing and plenty of pine and floral hop flavours coming through. There is a little bit of a bitter grapefruit taste but nothing too severe and there is a nice orange and citric fruit taste following on from it. As you would expect from something with so many hops coming through, it is also quite a bitter beer.
Palate (4/5):
With moderate carbonation and a medium mouthfeel, this one is quite a hop filled beer and quite dry in the finish. Lots of citrus in the mix and quite fruity as well.

Overall (17/20): A very nice beer and very much like an American style IPA which wasn’t at all what I was expecting. This one is a beer I had heard a lot about prior to drinking it and my only regret is that I put off trying it for so long. There is a great balance between the smell and the taste of this one and  it is definitely a beer I look forward to trying again sooner rather than later.
