Brewdog Jack Hammer (Draught)

Rating: 3.85

This one was launched in late 2012 as part of Brewdogs annual Prototype Challenge along with two other beers, this one an IPA was competing alongside a dry hopped pilsener and a 10% imperial stout and eventually finished a respectable second with 38% of the vote. It was narrowly beaten to first by Cocoa Psycho the imperial stout and finished well ahead of Nuns with Guns in 3rd with 22% of 658 votes cast. I’m not surprised the imperial stout won considering how much people seem to like them in craft brew circles but based on style I would have opted for this IPA first without trying them, hopefully it is a good one. Apparently despite losing out on a place in Brewdogs permanent roster this one will still be available intermittently whenever take the fancy to brew it in the future and sell it at their bars so keep your eyes peeled for it.

Appearance (4/5): A light amber colour with a clear body and a thin, foamy white head on top that is more of a lacing than anything else.
Aroma (8/10): Some lychee and bitter hops to begin with some pine and citrus along with a bit of grapefruit making up most of the rest. There is a solid IPA aroma to this one with a nice fruity smell in the background.
Taste (7/10): Much like the smell really with some dark fruits and bitter hops to begin and a helping of grapefruit and pine too. There is some strong bitter notes and and touch of sweet malts as well as some tropical flavouring.
Palate (4/5): A very bitter, American style IPA with a medium body and moderate carbonation. There is a nice citrus tang and a slightly dry finish.

Overall (15/20): Quite a nice, very bitter IPA that had some good fruit notes and a strong, hoppy taste. This one would fall somewhere in between Brewdogs Punk IPA and their Hardcore IPA, not only in alcohol content but also in sytle and taste; a very nice beer and one I would have again.
