Build A Rocket Boys!

Rating: 2.85

Another special beer now, this one apparently created by Manchester band Elbow, although I’m not entirely sure how much input they had in the brewing process but the band members are allegedly beer fans at least. The beer is brewed in association with Robinsons Family Brewers, located to too far away from the bands Manchester home. I’ve spotted this beer a number of times of late in Morrisons supermarkets but never bothered to pick it up until a few weeks ago, mainly due to the lack of new choices on my last visit to one of their stores. The beer is named after the bands fifth album and was originally released in October 2011 at the Manchester Food & Drink Festival and has since become available in bottles as well, I know this because mines came in one. Despite my initial scepticism, I’m hoping this one will prove to be a decent beer and not just come gimmick to increase beer sales off the back of the bands album (or vise verse); I guess there is only one way to find out.

Build A Rocket Boys!

Appearance (4/5): A clear amber colour with a large, four centimetre tall head that is creamy looking and forms a dome at the top of the pint. There is a lot of tiny bubbles rising to the surface and the head stays pretty well with no visible reduction in size to begin with.
Aroma (6/10): Medium strength malts, some caramel and a sort of metallic smelling end. There is a few bitter notes throughout and a touch of hops but it seems the makers played it safe with nothing adventurous in this one. It’s pretty faint with a few tinges of fruit in there too.
Taste (5/10): Some caramel malts and a fruity taste to begin with, along with some lighter hops and a little sweetness. There is a touch of spice but the beer also tastes a little watery and too light.
Palate (2/5): Light bodied with mild carbonation and a slightly bitter finish although not enough for the style.

Overall (11/20): Not a great bitter, it was pretty basic and was lacking in strength both in the taste and the smell with the body being too light as well. I’m not really surprised and had this pegged as a gimmick beer before trying it so it turns out I was right. Nothing out of the ordinary from it and it was also a little watery for my liking.
