De Molen Single Hop Citra

Rating: 3.9

De Molen, or The Mill as it translates to in English is a Dutch brewery based in the town of Bodegraven in south Holland since 2004 and until recently I hadn’t heard a thing about them. This changed when Brewdog started stocking some of their beers in their bars as well as on their online shop. In 2010 the brewery was listed as the tenth best in the world according to RateBeer.com and their beers dominate the Dutch top ten list on the site with 7 of their beers in the 2008 list and one more in the following years list. This beer, their Single Hop Citra is one I picked up in Aberdeen on a trip to Brewdogs bar there thanks to the limited knowledge I had of their beers and a recommendation from the bar staff in the pub; hopefully it turns out to be a good one.

De Molen Single Hop Citra

Appearance (4/5): A very slightly cloudy, orange to amber colour with a big looking head that is part foamy, part bubbly. There is some lacing left on the sides after a minute or two once the head starts to subside.
Aroma (7/10): A strong citrus aroma to begin as expected and backed up with some subdued tropical fruits that consist mainly of mango and pineapple along light grapefruit and pine, not as strong as some of the usual craft lager aromas but a pleasant one nonetheless.
Taste (8/10): Again as expected it is the citrus you notice first followed by some grapefruit and pine, both of which are a lot stronger here than in the nose. There is a lot of hoppy bitterness as well and the mango from the nose is in there too. Quite a nice tasting beer and easy to drink.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied with a crisp refreshing feel, a nice citrus tang and some lively carbonation. The bitterness is definitely noticeable but it’s not overdone either and the beer finishes of leaving you wanting more.

Overall (16/20): A solid IPA and definitely well worth trying, not as strong or as bitter as some of the American style craft beers but a very welcome change. The beer was well-balanced and very easy to drink, helped along by how refreshing it was and the fact that the alcohol levels weren’t through the roof for once.
