Newcastle Winter IPA

Rating: 3.45

After trying Newcastle’s Summer Ale and their Founders Ale over the summer, and with both of them being a disappointment I had to think twice before buying this one when I spotted it in Morrisons the other week. I the end I opted to grab the bottle as it was on special and the shop didn’t have much I hadn’t already tried, that and it was a ‘special’ winter ale. Based on their other beers I doubt this one will be much to write home about but hopefully it is worth a try and not a total waste of my time.

Newcastle Winter IPA

Appearance (4/5): A caramel amber colour with quite a nice looking, creamy white head on top and some pretty good retention as well. A nice looking beer, if perhaps a little clear looking.
Aroma (5/10): Some grassy hops and a few malts with a sort of nutty aroma, a hint of grass and some very light, earthy notes as well. Pretty basic on the nose and nothing all that interesting.
Taste (7/10): An earthy malt flavour to start with some caramel and a few lighter, grassy hops on top of that. The beer seems more like a bitter than an IPA and I was tempted to class it as such but the bottle does explicitly state otherwise. There is some bread and a general, earthy flavour to the beer but it was more enjoyable than I was expecting.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and quite clean tasting with moderate to light carbonation and an earthy bitter flavour to it. It was quite smooth and had a little dryness right at the end.

Overall (13/20): Quite a nice session beer and a big step up from what I was expecting, this one was highly drinkable and very easy to do so. Nothing stand out in its taste and the smell was too faint but overall it was a decent enough drink for what it is, although I’d still place closer to a bitter than an IPA but will go with what the brewery claims on the bottle anyway. Enjoyable and one I’d pick up again if the price was right.
