Marks & Spencer London Porter

Rating: 4.1

After buying this one I was slightly disappointed to learn that it was not the original Meantime version of the beer but a specially brewed offering that the produce for Marks & Spencers stores in the UK. This one is somewhat weaker, coming in at 5.5% abv. rather than the standard 6.5% and obviously the label art work is different too. I had been on the lookout for the original as I knew it appeared in the 1001 Beers list and thought this one would have counted but have since learnt it is in fact a different beer albeit a similar one. Naturally I’ll be on the lookout for the original in future and suspect it’ll be a  slight step up from this one but hopefully the Marks & Spencer version can hold its own until I can find the proper version somewhere.

Meantime Marks & Spencer London Porter

Appearance (5/5): A dark mahogany brown colour with a foamy, off-white to light tan head that stays very well and slows little sign of reduction for over five minutes.
Aroma (7/10): Some roasted malts, a nice helping of chocolate and some caramel along with fruits, vanilla and sugar make up most of the aroma in this one and it has a nice balance although perhaps could have smelt a little richer.
Taste (8/10): Nice roasted malts but nothing too strong along with some nice chocolate flavouring and some darker malts. There is some sweetness from the sugar and a light, hoppy flavour as well.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied, mild carbonation and a sort of creamy feel to the beer with a nice balance and a smooth, wet finish that is quite rich.

Overall (16/20): A pretty good beer although I suspect the original, non-Marks & Spencer one will be a step about this offering. Still this one was not without its own positives, the beer was well-balanced and very easy to drink with the chocolate and malts complimenting each other rather nicely. Another good Meantime beer, hopefully I can find the original sometime soon though.
