Nutty Black

Rating: 3.35

One of only a handful of beers to win the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain twice, this dark mild ale is a very highly regarded beer from the Thwaites brewery based in Blackburn, England. This one was a chance find in Home Bargains the other week and seeing as it was one of the few beers in the store that I hadn’t already tried I decided to give it a chance. After getting the beer home, for some reason I thought this one was a beer I had already tried but once I double checked it turned out I hadn’t so I was pleased with that. Along with this version Thwaites also offer a Very Nutty Black version of the beer, apparently an export strength version of this beer. If this one proves to be a good drink then I may have to look out for the other version in the future but for now this one will have to suffice.

Nutty Black

Appearance (4/5): Very dark mahogany to black with a very large, three-inch tall head that gradually increases in size once poured and was left overflowing the glass after even a light pour. The head is light brown and foamy with good retention.
Aroma (6/10): The smell is mainly a mix of darker, roasted malts and some coffee with a hint of nut as the name would suggest plus a little chocolate. There wasn’t a lot going on with this one but I also detected some sugary sweetness towards the end.
Taste (7/10): Much like the smell with some initial roasted malts and some chocolate with a little toffee but the nuttiness from the smell is not noticeable in the taste to me. There is a few earthy flavours and a hint of darker fruits too.
Palate (3/5): Smooth to the taste and quite creamy with a light medium body and a nice touch of bitterness and light carbonation and some sweetness at the end with a slightly dry finish.

Overall (13/20): Not a particularly great beer but a rather solid effort from Thwaites, the flavours were enjoyable but a little subdued and didn’t really grab your attention. The mouthfeel was good however and the alcohol content was just right making it an easy beer to drink.
