Stravaigin Croft Saison

Rating: 3.85

This one is a collaboration brew from Williams Brothers and United States based Stillwater Artisinal that I managed to try on tap in Williams Brothers Glasgow bar Inn Deep a few weeks ago but am just getting round to adding here now. The beer is one I had difficulty finding any information about online but was labelled as ‘Stravaigin Saison Croft’ on the tap at the bar although it does seem to go by quite a few similar titles online. Being a saison I felt it was well suited to be sampled on a warm day overlooking the river Clyde. Stillwater Artisinal is a Baltimore based ‘gypsy brewery’ that regularly uses facilities at other breweries with excess capacity rather than owing their own location, hence the reason for teaming up with Williams Brothers. The ‘brewery’ also seems to specialise in saison style ales with well over half of their beers listed on BeerAdvocate falling under that category so I assume they know what they are doing by now, with this beer being proof of that.
Stavaigin Croft Saison

Appearance (4/5): A bright orange amber colour with a thin, white lacing for a head with a clear body and some evidence of carbonation.
Aroma (8/10): Slightly sour to begin with a tarty aroma, some fruits and a citrus aroma in the background. There is some orange and lemon along with some pepper and spice.
Taste (7/10): A refreshing citrus taste to begin with some tart and sourness but not too much. There is some light orange and lemon with a hint of grapes. The finish is a slightly bitter and tangy one.
Palate (4/5): Smooth and quite bitter with a lot of citrus tang and some medium to strong carbonation. The beer is sharp, crisp and refreshing towards the end.

Overall (15/20): An unusual tarty yet very summery taste that was refreshing and a great, fruity beer with an interesting tang. Not what I’m used to trying on tap these days and a welcome change for me, this is a beer that I would have again no doubt.
