Thornbridge Wild Raven

Rating: 3.95

A rotating offering from Thornbridge now, a brewery whose beers I rarely pass up a chance to try now and this is mainly down to how much I enjoyed their Jaipur when I first tried it. This one will be my sixth beer from them, my first black IPA so I’m hoping it is a good one and it does seem to have some good reviews online already. It wasn’t a cheap bottle either and came in at £4 for the 500ml which is a bit cheap considering the beer in an English one but I won’t hold any of that against it. It is also worth mentioning that the beer is something called simply ‘Thornbridge Raven’ although ‘Wild Raven’ seems to be a more popular name.
Thornbridge Wild Raven

Appearance (4/5): This one is a deep mahogany colour that boarders on black and has a thumb sized, thick looking, foamy head on top that holds pretty well before eventually settling as a thick looking, light brown lacing. There is plenty of lacing left on the sides of the glass too and the beer is an opaque one.
Aroma (7/10): Initially quite hoppy with some pine and citrus notes along with a touch of grapefruit. This is followed up but some toasted, darker style malts and a hint of coffee. I could detect some sweetness, a little bit of bitter and a few background fruits competing for notice along with some faint chocolate and light tropical fruits.
Taste (8/10):
A nice start with good citrus and pine hops along with bitterness and a sweet malt taste. There is some darker malts from the nose, some grapefruit as well and a well balanced, bitter finish with hints of light chocolate and toasted malts.
Palate (4/5):
Medium body and a smooth, creamy feel with plenty of bitterness in the dry, citrus infused finish with lively carbonation.

Overall (17/20): This one was a beer I rather enjoyed, a nice beer that is a very good example of the style with the nice pine and bitter hops backed up with some toasted malts and the background chocolate and coffee that is subtle but definitely noticeable. A really nice beer and one that goes down far too easily.
