Nils Oscar Rökporter (190 of 1001)

Rating: 3.9

This one is my second Nils Oscar beer in June, the first being the brewery’s flagship God Lager at the start of the month. This is a bottle I bought alongside that one and a couple of Nils Oscar beer that I have still to try so hopefully this one is a nice beer and that will give me something to look forward to. I bought this one thinking it was a porter as well but have since found out that it is a rauchbier which makes me worried after the last few of that style were such disappointment, this one surely has to be better and redeem the style somewhat.
Nils Oscar Rökporter

Appearance (4/5): An opaque black with a pinky sized, foamy head that is a light brown colour and holds reasonably well before eventually settling as a thin lacing on top.
Aroma (7/10): A strong smoked wood aroma with tonnes of dark and rich malts to begin with. There is a strong smell from the beer that also includes hints of chocolate and coffee as well as a hint of bacon in the background although thankfully this isn’t too strong and the malts just about cover most of it.
Taste (8/10): The taste is dominated by the dark malts and a rich chocolate flavour that is backed up by some roasted malts and hints of coffee. There is some smoked flavours as well and then more milk chocolate. The bacon or ham from the end of the nose is nowhere to be found in the taste I’m glad to say and the beer is all the better for it.
Palate (4/5): Light than I was expecting from the smell but not really thin bodied. It is rich and creamy with moderate carbonation and a dry, mild bitter yet quite meaty finish.

Overall (16/20): A beer that is miles better than the last couple from the style that I have reviewed here, this one is definitely a smoked beer but luckily it doesn’t stink of ham or worse and can be drank with relative ease. The balance is good in this one and bar the hints of bacon right at the end of the aroma. This one is a really good beer, better than God Lager, the brewery’s other beer that I have already review here previously.
