Lagunitas IPA

Rating: 4.3

Despite picking up a couple of beers already this week I was tempted back in to Good Spirits Co. the very next day to pick up a couple bottles of this one after seeing they had a delivery in. The reason for this was because of how much I enjoyed the brewery’s A Little Sumpin Wild’ that I tried early last year and rated as one of my favourite ever beers. This one will be only my second from the Lagunitas Brewing Company but I wasn’t going to miss a chance to try another of their brews. This one was the brewery’s first ever seasonal when it was first released in 1995, two years after the brewery was opened, and it has since become a year round offering that is now one of their best selling and most popular beers. Upon reading a bit about this beer I was surprised to learn that it is brewed using 65 different malt varieties and 43 different types of hops and hopefully that translates to an excellent beer.

Lagunitas IPA

Appearance (5/5): A clear orange amber colour with a thumb sized, creamy looking white head that holds very well indeed and doesn’t seem to diminish much over the course of about ten minutes.
Aroma (9/10): This one has a fairly strong aroma with a good citrus and pine notes that comes with some grapefruit and a little bitterness too. There is some fruity undertones and helping of sweet malts too. A very nice smelling American style IPA with hints of tropical fruits.
Taste (8/10): Hoppy to begin with plenty of citrus and pine coming through along with the odd tropical fruit flavour plus some lighter grapefruit flavours. There is a good amount of bitterness and some lighter malts rounding off the taste.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and very bitter with lots of citrus giving it a dry and tangy mouthfeel. The beer has a slightly chewy texture and is definitely a bitter one but it’s not bad.

Overall (16/20): This one is a great IPA with a very good aroma that jumps right out of the bottle at you and the taste backs it up with plenty of pine, citrus and good bitterness coming through. Whilst not as good as their ‘A Little Sumpin’ Wild, this one is still very good and yet again the brewery does not disappoint; the head on this beer was particularly good as well and managed to hold right until end of the drink. This one is a beer that is well worth a try if you happen across it.
