Taiwan Beer Gold Medal

Rating: 1.25

Definitely not the most original name for a beer but it is one that I couldn’t pass on buying since it would be another country to add to my list, this one being my 60th in all and obviously the first from Taiwan or I wouldn’t have mentioned it. This one is brewed and distributed by the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation alongside the more well known Taiwan Beer that was previously a monopoly beer in the country but even to this day is the countries best selling beer. This version of the famous beer was launched in 2003 in its distinctive green can and for the life of me I can’t figure out how this beer managed to win a gold medal anywhere.
Gold Medal Taiwan Beer

Appearance (1/5): A yellow, straw colour with a tiny head that is bubbly and disappears instantly. The beer looks quite fizzy though.
Aroma (4/10): Sweet on the nose with a slightly citrus aroma, some lager malts and a hint of bread. There is an unusual lager aroma plus some water at the end but it’s not very strong or exciting.
Taste (2/10): Citrus with an almost lemonade like taste, if one that is a little watered down and comes with a touch of skunk on top. The beer is quite bland after that with some bitterness but not much, some corn and bread with various other adjuncts but it is a terrible taste really.
Palate (1/5): Despite the bubbles in the body this one is flat with pretty much no carbonation at all and only minor hints of bitterness to distract from an overwhelmingly watery and flat taste.

Overall (5/20): A pathetic excuse for a beer and a disappointing introduction a Taiwanese beer with a terrible taste and a shocking mouthfeel, this one is close to being the worst beer I have ever tried although it’s thankfully not quite there. The carbonation was non-existent and the beer was incredibly hard to drink as a direct result of this. Apparently a “Taiwan Beer-Monde Selections Choice for Grand Gold Medal”, if this is the best the country has to offer (and surely not) when I’ll be happy never to try another from Taiwan again. This was truly was a beer that had nothing good going for it at all.
