Sierra Nevada Tumbler

Rating: 4.1

This one is an autumn seasonal beer from Sierra Nevada that has been available since 2010 but has since been discontinued with 2013 being the last year it would have been available. The beer was one of the least popular Sierra Nevada offerings by sales but seems to gain fairly good reviews online. This was one of the few beers I ordered from the Beers of Europe website before Christmas that does not feature in the 1001 Beers To Try Before You Die book, the main reason for me ordering a bottle being based on the good reviews it received online so I’m very hopefully this will be a good one.
Sierra Nevada Tumbler

Appearance (5/5): A very nice, deep caramel colour with a thumb sized, foamy beige head that holds very well with little reduction initially before finally reducing some and holding at about three quarters of its initial height and some lacing on the sides.
Aroma (7/10): Earthy hops and a little bit of caramel sweetness, there is some toasted bitterness that follows this and some nutty notes as well. The aroma seems well balanced and a few darker malts feature as well.
Taste (8/10): A combination of sweet caramel malts and earthy hops that is followed later on by some bitterness and a touch of grain. I could detect some very faint chocolate and some light roasted malts too.
Palate (4/5): Well carbonated and quite crisp with mouthfeel and a smooth sort of dry finish. The body is medium and quite filling with a great balance and a smoky, moderately bitter finish.

Overall (16/20): This one is frighteningly easy to drink, very smooth throughout and with a crisp, bitter finish; I was looking forward to this one and again Sierra Nevada doesn’t disappoint. Whilst not the very best from the brewery that I’ve tried this one is certainly up there with them; an all round excellent brew.
