Smithwick’s Winter Spirit

Rating: 2.05

This one will be my third beer that falls under the Smithwick’s banner, the last being their Pale Ale that I reviewed almost exactly a year ago after trying on a visit to Ireland. Again I picked this bottle up while in Ireland over the Christmas and New Year holidays, mainly because it was one of only two beers in the local supermarket that I hadn’t already tried and the rest of the selection was pretty poor. I’ve not really been impressed with any of the other Smithwick bees I’ve tried to date and as expected this one wasn’t really any different. Nothing more than a poor, 2013 release of a winter seasonal beer from the Irish brewery and one that I’m glad I won’t be likely to see again.
Smithwick's Winter Spirit

Appearance (2/5): Chestnut with some red tinges and a thin, bubbly head that is a darker than usual beige colour. This fades to a soapy lacing after only a few seconds with a tiny bit of lacing on the sides.
Aroma (4/10): Fairly light smelling with some earthy malts and a light sugar aroma. There is a nutty smell with some faint roasted notes, a little biscuit and a hint of grain towards the end but overall the smell is a basic one that was far too faint.
Taste (5/10): Caramel and some grain start things off but the taste is my no means a sweet one. This is followed by some roasted malts and a little bitterness but there isn’t much else to be honest and it taste fairly bland.
Palate (2/5): A little grain comes through on top of a moderately bitter, medium body and moderate carbonation that almost seems gassy and bland.

Overall (7/20): This one was a really poor beer I’m afraid and one that was both too bland and too simple with not enough going on to distract from what was basically bitterness and some roasted flavours. The palate wasn’t the smoothest and the beer seemed a little unsettling and gassy upfront which didn’t help matters any.
