Unleash the Yeast – Bavarian Weizen

Rating: 2.75

Quickly following on from my last review this one is another from the Brewdog Unleash the Yeast series, this time the hefeweizen of the pack that was finished off by pitching some Bavarian Weizen yeast into the brew. This one follows on from the previous review of the Unleash the Yeast – Pilsen Lager and will be my first ever hefeweizen from Brewedog, a style of beer they seem to shy away from, probably due to the fact that Bavarian breweries do it so well on their own as it is. This one is the beer from the four that I am most looking forward to trying although if I’m honest I don’t expect it to be the best, mainly because Brewdog aren’t a German brewery. In addition to this, the beer comes in at 6.3% which is fairly high for a hefeweizen so many that’ll have some adverse effects on the taste, hopefully not though but we shall see.
Unleash The Yeast - Bavarian Weizen

Appearance (3/5): A clear and slightly orange looking amber colour with a thin, half-centimetre tall, bubbly, white head that quickly fades to a patchy lacing that covers most but not all of the surface of the beer.
Aroma (5/10): Lively smelling with some citrus followed  hints of banana and a slightly stronger smell of bubblegum on top of that. There is a fruity backbone to the aroma and it is definitely reminiscent of other hefeweizens but at the same time quite different and not altogether that pleasant.
Taste (5/10): Strong bubblegum flavours with banana following closely behind are what start this beer off, there is also some light citrus and some citrus and fresh grass in there as well with some bitterness rounding things off.
Palate (3/5): Medium carbonation on top of a medium body and a slight tang to the beer. The beer was a little bland and almost watery on the palate in places and the balance was all over the place with on flavour running into the next.

Overall (11/20): This one was a definite step backwards from the first in the Unleash The Yeast series that I tried with the Pilsen Lager offering tasting a lot better than this one, although neither of them were particularly good beers. In came out a little like a hefeweizen with the banana and bubblegum that was doted throughout the taste and smell but other than that there wasn’t much to link it to the style; drinkable but not a good one really.
