Peerless Oatmeal Stout

Rating: 3.65

This one will be my second of two beers I was given as a gift from a family member returning from a trip to Liverpool, the first being Ship in a Bottle Mersey Ale that I reviewed here a short while again and like that one, this one is from a brewery that I am not at all familiar with. Peerless is an English brewery based in Birkenhead, a town opposite Liverpool, situated on the Wirral peninsula and was founded in 2009. This offering, their oatmeal stout is one of the breweries main, year-round beers of which they have about ten. I’m not usually a huge fan of oatmeal stouts but I do enjoy seeking out new breweries and seeing what they have to offer so hopefully this one will surprise me and I can look out for it again should I ever make it to Liverpool as I plan to at some point in future.
Peerless Oatmeal Stout

Appearance (4/5): A very dark mahogany with a large, one inch tall head that is quite thick looking and holds quite well initially. The head holds about two centimetres tall and is a tan colour that leaves a little lacing on the sides as well.
Aroma (6/10): This one smells of roasted malts and barely with quite a bit of spice coming through. There is some chocolate and coffee coming through with some background sweetness and cocoa; the beer also seems quite lively on the nose.
Taste (7/10): Much like the smell with a lot of dark and roasted flavours coming through alongside some chocolate and cocoa plus a little bit of coffee. Some hints of fruit and oatmeal linger around the middle with some spice featuring as well before a bittersweet finish rounds things off.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied with hints of sweetness throughout and a bit of spice too. There is a smooth and creamy feel to the beer with some hints of bitterness as well.

Overall (15/20): This one was a fairly pleasant and easy to drink stout, the taste and smell was quite basic but seemed to work well. The oatmeal taste was quite light with the roasted malts seemingly taking over from the start but it was a beer that was surprisingly enjoyable for the style, although it’s not one that I’m the biggest fan of.
