Founders Rübæus

Rating: 3.55

Another beer from Michigan based Founders brewery, my 6th from what is fast becoming one of my favourite American breweries although that is helped in no small part by the fact that their beers are becoming increasingly more available in the UK with each passing month. Rübæus is a raspberry flavoured fruit beer that I picked up recently from a Glasgow bottle shop and it’s one that I’ve not seen before, a summer seasonal from Founders that is available from May to August each year. The beer is apparently brewed using fresh raspberries that are added at five different stages of the brewing process making it the perfect summer beer to enjoy in the afternoon before watching some World Cup football and should be a good warm up before I crack open some of the stronger Founders beers I picked up last year and have been cellaring it ever since.
Founders Rübæus

Appearance (4/5): Pours a raspberry red colour with tinges of purple and topped with a pinkish-white head that is bubbly and leaves some nice lacing on the edges, although there isn’t a lot of it. Retention isn’t too bad with the head slowly settling to a thin lacing that just about covers the entire surface of the beer.
Aroma (7/10): Strong raspberry notes on the nose upfront, naturally given the beer but thankfully the aroma wasn’t overly sweet or sugary initially. There was a malty aroma from the start as well, which done well to offset some of the sweetness. Some sourness and berries come through as well and a slight amount of tartness follows.
Taste (7/10): Slightly sweeter than the nose but still not overdone, the taste mirrors the aroma well with some sugar and sweetness, touches of bitterness and plenty of raspberries. There is some tart and sourness as well to round things off but very little in the way of hops.
Palate (3/5): Smooth and very sweet as I was expecting, there is some hints of sourness and bitterness as well but naturally the sweetness prevails. Carbonation seems about medium and the body was about the same, perhaps light medium and pleasantly refreshing, particularly at first.

Overall (15/20): This one was a fairly good fruit beer, certainly one of the best that I’ve tried along with Jungle Beer Tropical Wheat and the grapefruit version of St. Peter’s Fruit Beer. This one was easy to drink and went down well with some nice malts and bitterness helping level out the sweetness from the raspberries. It was a good beer but probably not one you could drink much more than a bottle of, although that rings true for most fruit beers out there and I won’t hold that against it.
