Hitachino Nest Dai Dai Ale

Rating: 3.0

Now for what I believe is my ninth beer from the Kiuchi brewery, a bottle of Hitachino Nest Dai Dai Ale that I picked up in Glasgow at the tail end of last week. This is a beer that I was intrigued by when I spotted it on offer, firstly because it was a new beer from the Japanese brewery that I hadn’t seen before but mainly because it was labelled as an ‘Orange IPA’ and I was anxious to see what one would be like. The first thing I’ll mention after trying this one then is that I think it’s a bit of a stretch to label it an IPA at all, the beer had the odd hint of hops in it but these were so faint and minimal that classing it as a fruit beer seems more fitting. I’ve had a few Hitachino beers now and every now and again one of them surprises me and turns out to be a pretty good beer so I’m always on the lookout for more of their stuff, sadly this wasn’t one of those times and this one turned out to be pretty average once I’d tried it.
Hitachino Nest Dai Dai Ale

Appearance (3/5): Bright amber with a clear body and some visible carbonation. The head was quite a thin looking one that sat at about quarter of a centimetre tall and turned quite patchy after a few seconds.
Aroma (6/10): There was a definite smell of oranges to this one, it was almost overpowering in fact, although some wheat and a little sweetness appears soon after. I could detect some hops although this was minimal and touches of bitterness plus various background fruits rounded things off but it was the oranges that dominated right from the start.
Taste (6/10): Much like the smell, the taste of this one is dominated by a strong orange presence that also hints at some alcohol in there. Some yeast, a little wheat and some bitterness make an appearance alongside some subtle hops and a perfume like flavour that seemed quite floral.
Palate (3/5): Smooth with a medium body and light medium carbonation, this one is slightly sweet and some hints of alcohol also feature.

Overall (12/20): This one was a fairly average beer from the Kiuchi brewery and definitely wasn’t on of their better offerings, the beer just seemed to be dominated by the orange smell and flavour and despite being labelled as an IPA I would be more inclined to put it down as a fruit beer. There was a lack of hops in this one and the touches of alcohol that were present could perhaps have been better masked as well.
