Dublin Brewer Blonde Ale

Rating: 2.85

A bottle I had on my last night in Dublin last month, a local beer from the new Dublin Brewer company that I managed to try in a restaurant in the Temple Bar area of the city before heading off to watch the World Cup final. I opted for this one over some good Brewdog beers that the place offered, mainly because it was a locally brewed beer and the waiter recommended it. It was also mentioned that it was brewed by the restaurant which I took to mean the people who own the restaurant also run the microbrewery but to be honest I’ve no idea and I was struggling to find much information out about them online. I was also told that this one was the brewery’s first ever beer so I wasn’t sure going in how good it would be but either way this one is a new beer and one that I was happy to give a go, here’s what I thought of it.

Dublin Brewer Blonde Ale

Appearance (3/5): The beer pours a very clear looking and golden colour with a thin, bubbly white head on top that is more of a lacing that anything else, sticking to the circumference of the glass for the most part.
Aroma (6/10): There is some sweetness to this one initially with the beer seeming quite light on the nose. There is a basic hop aroma and some light, grassy hops in there alongside faint honey but overall the beer is fairly light and almost bland on the nose, some additional strength would have been welcome.
Taste (5/10): Like the smell before it, this one starts quite light and almost seems bland as well with some faint hops, hints of citrus and a light bitterness coming through next. There was some sweetness in places but a fair amount of water accompanied it although some lighter malts bit come through too.
Palate (3/5): Light medium in body with a smooth feel but one that was also quite bland and watered down. Carbonation was on the light side although some touches of fizz did at least make a brief appearance before a slightly bitter and dry aftertaste rounded things off.

Overall (11/20): This one definitely had potential to be an enjoyable beer with the flavours seeming to go well together but the beer was just far too bland and watered down work. Some light hops and the faintest of malts did start to come through around the middle but it would clutching at straws to suggest these saved the beer in any way. Not one I could recommend but I certainly wouldn’t be put off trying other beers from the brewer should they brew any more in future.
