Hipsway

Rating: 3.15

Another Williams Brothers beer, this one being a beer that I’ve been on the look out for recently having discovered that Aldi supermarkets were stocking it but each time I’ve visited one of their stores I’ve been out of luck and in the end I managed to find a bottle in a Sainsbury’s supermarket over the weekend. The beer is labelled as a premium lager and mentions that strawberries are used in the brewing process so I’m eager to find out exactly how this one will turn out as a result. The beer was first introduced in the second half of 2013 as an entry in that years Sainsbury’s Great Gritish Beer Hunt and takes it’s name from the Glasgow band Hipsway, using Slovakian and New Zealand hops along with the strawberries. I tend to find that Williams Brothers beers go one of two ways for me, I either love them or find them incredibly average but I keep going back to them as more often than not I enjoy them, hopefully this one goes the same way.
Hipsway

Appearance (4/5): Very light amber and clear with some light bubbles and a one centimetre tall, foamy white head on top that holds fairly well over the opening few minutes and has quite a creamy looking texture to it.
Aroma (6/10): Light malts and some background hops with a few fruits making an appearance as well. There was some sweetness to this one with strawberries making an appearance as promised. I managed to detect some citrus in there but the aroma was more of an unusual than a bad one.
Taste (6/10): Fruity with the strawberries again making themselves known along with some citrus and orange flavours. The beer has a syrup like taste to it with some earthy malts and sweetness coming through but in truth the beer was a fairly ordinary one.
Palate (3/5): Light to light-medium bodied and fairly smooth, there is an almost artificially sweet feel to this the beer and it featured moderate carbonation.

Overall (11/20): This one turned out to be a fairly average one from Williams Brothers, it definitely wasn’t a bad beer but at the same time it wasn’t one that I particularly enjoyed or would go back to again. The beer was sweet throughout but nothing else really stood out for me and I imagine this one will turn out to be a very forgettable beer.
