DC Brau The Public

Rating: 3.7

Time for a special beer now and one from somewhere I’ve been hoping to try a beer from almost since I started this blog, Washington D.C. in the United States. I’ve been attempting to slowly work my way through a beer from every state, something that is proving harder than I imagined and I thought that even though Washington D.C. technically isn’t a state that I would include it nonetheless. This is another beer that I was given as a gift from a someone returning from the United States recently and is one of two DC Brau beers I now have to review. Having been founded in 2009, DC Brau is the first brewery inside the District of Columbia since the Heurich Brewery closed down back in 1956 although I don’t believe they started distributing until 2011 and a few more have since opened in the area. Fittingly this one was their inaugural beer when it was first canned in 2011 so I opted to try this one before given their ‘The Corruption’ offering a go but I am looking forward to both.

DC Brau The Public

Appearance (3/5): Pours a hazy, red tinged amber with a centimetre and a half tall, bubbly white head that leaves some lacing on the sides of the glass as it slowly reduces in size, eventually leaving a thin lacing on top of the surface with more of a build up around the edges.
Aroma (7/10): Quite hoppy on the nose with some pine and to a slightly lesser extent some tropical fruits, there is some strong citrus too and a lot of bitterness that follows. Grapefruit, orange and lemon zest all make an appearance some faint malts and hints of caramel rounding  things off. The aroma was a pleasant one but it definitely wasn’t the most pronounced, that was the only negative from the nose really.
Taste (8/10): Bitter tasting with plenty of grapefruit, some resinous pine and the odd tropical fruit flavours initially. There is some a good citrus taste before some pale malts begin to come through, nothing overly pronounced but they are in there. The hops definitely come through most with this one and it’s quite refreshing on the taste buds; a very nice tasting beer.
Palate (4/5): Very bitter on the palate with a medium body, maybe just a touch lighter. Carbonation is fairly good with this one and the beer is quite dry, particularly towards the end. I enjoyed the balance here and there was just the faintest touch of alcohol in there, a very drinkable beer.

Overall (16/20): Not a bad first beer from Washington DC, this one was very enjoyable without going down as a classic. The taste and smell were certainly hop filled and well-balanced with the pine and tropical flavours offset by the pale, sweet malts which could have been stronger but were pleasant ones nonetheless.
