Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

Rating: 3.95

My fifth Dogfish Head beer now, this one following on from their Festina Péche that I reviewed here recently and like that offering this one is another seasonal beer from the brewery – as you might have already guess, this one is their fall offering released annually to coincide with Halloween which is apparently a lot more widely celebrated holiday than what it is in the UK. The beer was one of the first the brewery ever made and managed to claim 1st place at the 1994 Punkin Chunkin Recipe Contest that was held month before the brewery was even opened. Released around September 1st each year, the beer is always popular and is apparently gone by Thanksgiving so I feel lucky I’ve managed to get hold of a bottle.

Dogfish Head Punkin Ale

Appearance (4/5): Pours a clear, bright amber to copper colour with a fine, bubbly white head cum lacing that covers the surface and hints at strong carbonation with quite a few bubbles rising to the surface.
Aroma (7/10): You can tell this one is a pumpkin ale straight away, there is a lot of spice coming through initially with good pumpkin notes and sweetness not far behind. The alcohol content is fairly well hidden on the nose, only a tiny amount is noticeable and the aroma is well balanced with some bread in there too but is the spices that dominate with cinnamon, nutmeg and various others featuring.
Taste (8/10): Again quite spicy with some cinnamon and nutmeg accompanying the sugar and pumpkin, there is a strong malt presence with some bread and background fruits coming through as well. Some hops make an appearance, as does hints of alcohol from the nose but again these aren’t the strongest with some toasted malts and background fruits seeing things out.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied with above average carbonation and a nice spicy feel to the beer that was tangy and had a good balance. The beer was quite easy to drink and smooth with a dry finish.

Overall (17/20): After a so-so last effort Dogfish Head are definitely back on track for me with this offering and what a beer it is, easily the best pumpkin beer I’ve tried and an excellent all round offering that falls short of being a classic but is very drinkable indeed. Starting off quite spicy, I was initially fearful that this one would end up like the recent Brewdog pumpkin beer I tried, Pumpkinhead, but thankfully this one was a lot more balanced and enjoyable, definitely one I’d pick up each year if it were available here in the UK.
