Nollaig (Christmas Spruce Beer)

Rating: 4.35

A huge bottle of beer now, this one is a one litre glass bottle of Williams Brothers annual winter/Christmas offering that I received recently as part of my works Secret Santa gift exchange, it seems they know me well. This one was actually a beer that I was planning to pick up this year having missed the opportunity last Christmas, although I would likely have grabbed one of the less impressive 330ml bottle where I buying it for myself. This one does seem like a good beer for sharing though, I reckon I’ll probably have to if I want to enjoy any other beers after this one since it comes in at a nice 7% abv., I imagine the swing top bottle design is to allow it to be enjoyed over a couple hours without it going flat too quickly. The beer has all the hallmarks of a classic in that each time it becomes available it quickly sells out so hopefully that translates to a good beer, either way I’m looking forward to finding out.

Nollaig (Christmas Spruce Beer)

Appearance (5/5): Light copper to amber in colour with a one centimetre tall, flat head with amazing retention over the opening five minutes, there is literally no reduction in size at all and the beer looks fantastic.
Aroma (9/10): Very hoppy on the nose straight off the bat, there is a lot of pine and grapefruit making itself known alongside some very nice floral notes and a touch of biscuit and malt too. A few tropical fruits come forward as well with some apricot and mango adding some sweetness, the aroma is an excellent one.
Taste (8/10): Quite fruity and very hoppy, there is a lot of bitterness making itself known with some pine and berries making an appearance too. The taste is quite a floral one with a lot of herbal flavours and some spice too. Again this is very nice stuff from Williams Brothers, an excellent tasting beer that goes down easily.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and very bitter with a good, fruity backing and strong carbonation. The beer is smooth and easy to drink with an excellent balance.

Overall (17/20): This one was a truly excellent Christmas beer from Williams Brothers, the beer is up there with the best of the seasonal offerings I have tried and really went down a treat. There was a tonne of hops and plenty of fruity, bitter flavours that surprised me at just how good it was, I’ll definitely be on the look out for this one again next year.
