Founders Double Trouble

Rating: 3.85

A huge, double IPA from Michigan based Founders brewery now and a beer that is currently ranked as the 96th best beer of the style of the BeerAdvocate rating website. Given that double IPA’s are among the most rated on the site I am definitely looking forward to this one all the more now given that some excellent beers are on that very same list and can’t wait to crack it open. For what will be my tenth beer from Founders, this one comes in at 86 IBU’s and should be loaded with flavour if past offerings from the brewery are anything to go by. A real, big beer and one that I hope will not disappoint.

Founders Double Trouble

Appearance (4/5): This one pours slightly cloudy and a bright looking, medium amber colour with a thin, half centimetre tall head that is a bubbly texture but it took quite an aggressive pour to get anything showing at the top. The retention isn’t bad though considering this is a strong, double IPA with the head sitting as a thick looking lacing that completely covers the surface of the beer.
Aroma (8/10): Quite fruity with a lot of citrus early on and some pine hops backing this up, there is a nice helping of grapefruit as well. Definitely a hop filled beer but some nice caramel malts and sweetness great a good balance against the tropical notes that hit you early on. Some floral notes and further bitterness come through as well to see things out.
Taste (7/10): Strong pine and citrus hops start things off here with a lot of bitterness as a result of this. There is a strong tropical fruit presence with some grapefruit adding further bitterness but this is at least partially offset by the caramel malts and hints of toffee from the nose, some sweetness and sugars come off the back of this too.  It’s a nice tasting beer but it’s maybe just a touch too bitter for my liking.
Palate (4/5): Smooth and full of big flavours and a tonne of bitterness, partially offset by some of the sweetness but maybe more could have been done. The alcohol is noticeable but not overpowering, it does give the beer a slightly warming and boozy feel towards the end with a nice bite to finish. Carbonation is just past medium and the finish is a dry, crisp one.

Overall (15/20): This one was a very strong and incredibly bitter double IPA, one that I was expecting to be as such but I still ended up surprised by the strength of it, it was absolutely loaded with hops. A very in your face beer and one that had to be sipped away at slowly rather than quaffed, perhaps the only thing that prevented me from rating it that little bit higher.
