Galway Hooker Irish Stout

Rating: 3.8

This one is the first review from the new beers I managed to try whilst in the north of Ireland over Christmas and New Year a couple of weeks ago, this is me just getting round to uploading the reviews. The first beer is a Galway beer, an Irish Stout from the Galway Hooker brewery and it will be my second from the brewery following on from their Pale Ale that I managed to try in Dublin last year. This one isn’t a beer that I spotted anywhere in Dublin on my visit, surprising considering how popular their Pale Ale is in the city but that just meant I was all the more surprised when I spotted it in a Lisnaskea off-license just before New Year. Having tried this now means that I have reviewed both of the brewery’s regular offerings but I have since noticed that they brew a few specials as well so hopefully I can sample a few of them at some point in the near future as well.

Galway Hooker Irish Stout

Appearance (3/5): Opaque black with a fine, light tan coloured head on top that barely covers the surface and looks slightly patchy. Thankfully there is little movement after the beer settles though and the head remains as a fine lacing throughout but it was far from impressive looking sadly.
Aroma (8/10): Quite sweet on the nose, especially for the style but it falls short of being overdone. There was a lot of vanilla coming through, definitely more than I would have expected and some good roasted malts follow along with some coffee and a touch of smokiness. The beer had a good balance on the nose with some nice sweetness leveling out the dark malts and roasted notes.
Taste (8/10): Coffee and lots of dark malts kick things off but the vanilla from the nose is thankfully present too. The beer has a good helping of dark fruits adding to the sweetness with a little burnt sugar and a nice, bittersweet finish to proceedings.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and definitely quite sweet, this beer was a smooth and almost creamy one with a good bitterness throughout and light-medium carbonation levels with a clean, dry finish to see things out.

Overall (16/20): This one was quite an enjoyable beer from Galway Hooker, definitely more sweet than I had anticipated but the vanilla flavours that came through from the start were very nice and highly enjoyable, the sweetness doing well to balance the beer against it’s stronger, more traditional stout flavours. A solid beer and one that I’ll look to pick up again the next time I’m in Ireland.
