Kinnegar Yannaroddy

Rating: 3.8

One of the last few beers that I reviewed in Ireland over the New Years holidays but that I’m just getting round to uploading now, this one being one of three Kinnegar beers that I picked up with reviews of their Scraggy Bay IPA and Limeburner pale ale to follow this one. I picked this particular bottle up as part of a deal along with the previously mentioned Scraggy Bay, the three beers being the only from the brewery that the shop I was in had in stock. I was immediately intrigued by this bottle however as it was labelled as a coconut porter which reminded me of the can of Maui CocoNut Porter that I reviewed here back in April 2012 and remember quite well, I was hoping this one would be at least a slight improvement upon that offering however. Anyway here it is, my first of three Kinnegar beers.

Kinnegar Yannaroddy

Appearance (5/5): Dark in colour, almost pitch black with a huge, foamy head that is a light tan colour. Retention is quite good, there is little to no movement of the head over the opening five minutes and quite a thick bit of lacing is left on the glass as you work your way down the beer.
Aroma (6/10): This one is about medium strength on the nose with some roasted malts and sweetness kicking things off, there is some sugar coming through too with a nutty backing and some oats. I couldn’t detect much in the way of the coconut mentioned on the label but there some some light chocolate and a little grain towards the end.
Taste (7/10): Roasted malts and some nuttiness, there is some grain as well with quite a sweet backing plus some sugars and chocolate coming through. Finally some of the much promised coconut makes itself known in the taste, there isn’t much of it but I could at least detect some before faint coffee and some bitterness drowned it out. Overall the beer tastes quite nice and the coconut keeps things interesting despite the fact I was hoping it would come through a little stronger.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied and fairly well carbonated, this one is slightly grainy with a sweet backing and some sugars adding to this. The beer has quite a chewy palate with a solid bitterness throughout and a dry, slightly tangy finish that seems to linger for some time.

Overall (14/20): Not a bad beer at all and one that rates about the same as the previously reviewed Maui CocoNut Porter, the appearance of this one the only thing that brings the score out higher here. As I mentioned, I would have preferred the coconut to be a little more pronounced in the taste of this one and to at least be detectable on the nose but other than that this one was a fairly decent effort and something a little different that is well worth picking up should you come across a bottle.
