Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout

Rating: 3.95

Time for another of the big beers that I picked up just before Christmas from the Beers of Europe website, this one will be my twelfth beer from the Maryland based Flying Dog Brewery. For the order I placed I was focusing heavily on beers that feature in the 1001 beers list but this was one of the few that I picked up not to be included on the list, the reason for me grabbing a bottle was due to the fact that I quite enjoy beers from the brewery, particularly their Gonzo Imperial Stout and was hoping this one would be similarly enjoyable. Coming in at 8.9%, this coffee stout is an occasional brew from Flying Dog that gets fairly good reviews online, another reason for me ordering a bottle, and uses coffee beans from the Black Dog Coffee Company from Summit Point, West Virginia.

Kujo Imperial Coffee Stout

Appearance (4/5): This one is pitch black in colour, opaque and topped with a very thin looking, tan head that holds fairly steady throughout and seems to completely cover the surface of the beer as well.
Aroma (8/10): Quite a lot of dark malt notes open up the nose of this one, there is a strong coffee aroma that is backed up by some roasted malts and dark chocolate. I could detect a hint of sweetness as well as some faint alcohol, although that is to be expected for such a strong beer.
Taste (7/10): Matching the nose closely, the taste opens up with some dark malts and a lot of coffee as well, there is some touches of sweetness coming through too and these seem to be ever so slightly more pronounced that they were with the nose. I got some faint backing fruits, notably dark and ripe ones, coming through with some further roasted malts and chocolate.
Palate (4/5): Medium bodied, heading towards full bodied but it’s not quite there. The beer has some light alcohol and slightly boozy feel to proceedings with quite a smooth body and a faint bitterness towards the end.

Overall (17/20): Another very enjoyable beer from Flying Dog, this one was surprisingly easy to drink given the strength of the beer and the strong roasted malts and coffee seems to go well towards, striking a good balance and being leveled out a little but the hints of sweetness coming from the dark fruits and sugars. A very nice imperial stout that was well worth picking up although I would probably pick up a bottle of the breweries Gonzo Imperial Stout again before going back to this one.
