Wooha Lager

Rating: 3.4

This one is another beer I picked up at Aldi recently as part of their annual beer festival and it follows on from the bottle of Ritual Pale Ale from the Alechemy brewery that I picked up alongside this one. This particular offering comes from a new brewery for 2015 that is based in Nairn in the north of Scotland and is one of two beers that the brewery currently produces, the other being their Wooha Porter (although they are also in the process of creating a third beer to be called Wooha Wheat). Coming from a brewery I had heard nothing about going in and if I’d known this was such a new outfit I’d have been tempted to give it a miss until I found out if the beer was any good but it did come highly recommended by others I know who have tried it so hopefully it’ll be a good one.

Wooha Lager

Appearance (4/5): This one pours a sightly hazy looking, golden amber colour and is topped with a large, three centimetre tall head that’s bubbly and white with fairly good retention over the opening minute or so.
Aroma (6/10): Light malts and some citrus come through with this one early on with some grassy hops and straw seeming to be most noticeable. The beer seemed quite fresh and lively with a little spice and some hints of sweetness sneaking through as well.
Taste (6/10): Starting with some citrus and grassy hops, there is some spice and cereal in there too. I got some light malts and a few touches of straw but to be honest there’s not a whole going on with the taste but what there is comes through quite nicely and is rounded with some light bitterness at the end.
Palate (4/5): This beer had a medium body and was quite fresh and crisp with a clean mouthfeel and some touches of spice in there too. There was a very faint amount of sweetness coming through but for the most part the citrus tang won out and the finish was a semi-bitter, dry one.

Overall (12/20): An okay first beer from Wooha if I’m honest, the beer went down fairly easy and was enjoyable enough but there wasn’t a whole lot of variety with it and I can’t imagine it being one that I’m all that likely to pick up again. The citrus and grassy hops were nice but other than that there wasn’t much else to the beer, the taste in particular came across as fairly one dimensional; drinkable but not a great one sadly.
