Lagunitas Sucks

Rating: 4.05

This one will be my fifth beer from Lagunitas now and amazing my third new one from them in the past six weeks alone; their beers really must be becoming easier to find in the UK now. This one follows on from the bottle of Lagunitas Pils that I had and quite enjoyed a couple of weeks ago now and it is one that I was very surprised to find on-tap in the UK; granted it was in London but still. I stumbled across the beer in the Euston Tap on my last day of a recent trip to London and just before jumping on a train from Euston station back home, it was my last beer of the trip and a good way to round it off I felt. The beer itself is one that I’ve been aware of for some time now, it was originally brewed in 2011 as a festive replacement for Lagunitas’s seasons Brown Shugga Ale when they discovered that they would not have the brewing capacity to brew it that year (hence the name as well) when they were in the process of completing their new brew house. As it turns out, the substitute ale proved to be a successful one in its own right and has since become a year round offering and part of the main Lagunitas range; I just need to find me some Brown Shugga ale now.

Lagunitas Sucks

Appearance (4/5): Quite a bright and clear bodied beer, this one is an amber orange colour and is topped with a thin, foamy white head that’s more of a fine surface lacing that anything else; clarity wise the beer is good with the odd bubble rising to the surface.
Aroma (8/10): Strong malts and some nice caramel kick things off here, there is a lot of sweetness to the beer with some good sugars coming through early on. I got some nice orange and citrus notes around the middle with a subtle hop backing as well as some good pine and tropical fruits notes.
Taste (8/10): Matching the nose, there was again a lot of sweetness to this one with some solid caramel malts and touches of brown sugar to begin. These were followed by the citrus and orange from the nose along with some grapefruit, lemon, peach and maybe even some mango and apricot too before some touches of spice rounded things off at the end.
Palate (4/5): Quite a sweet beer but a well-balanced one with lots of bitterness and a clean, dry finish. The beer was smooth throughout with a very slightly warming alcohol feel at times that gave the beer a boozy feel. There was some spice at the end and a lingering bitterness in the aftertaste.

Overall (17/20): This one was another excellent beer from Lagunitas, it wasn’t quite as hoppy as I’d expected in my mind with the sweet malts taking more a front seat but some did feature and the balance was a good one. The beer proved to be quite an easy one to drink as well, despite the strength, and is one well worth seeking out and trying.
