Finn Lager

Rating: 2.95

Finn Irish Craft Lager was one of the first beers I picked up on my recent trip to Ireland and is a beer brewed at the Station Works Brewery in County Down, an off-shoot of Cumberland Breweries in Carlisle. Named after the legendary Finn McCool is is said to have been responsible for creating Giant’s Causeway, this one is a pale lager that I really only picked up because it was new to me and relatively cheap, although it wasn’t one I was holding out much hope for to be honest but here’s what I thought of it anyway.

Finn Lager

Appearance (3/5): Light bodied, almost a clear golden amber with a thin white head on top that’s about a quarter centimetre tall and slightly foamy in texture, just about covering the surface of the beer.
Aroma (6/10): Strong citrus notes kick things off with some floral touches too before some vegetable adjuncts and the odd bit of fruit comes through, mainly some apples and a faint bit of pear as well. The beer was quite fresh with some subtle grassy hops coming through but it was also fairly light.
Taste (6/10): Citrus and some light floral flavours kick things off here and as a result the beer matches the nose well. There is some bread and a few lager malts that follow before the grassy hops from the end of the nose make a brief appearance. I could detect some basic adjuncts too and there wasn’t much variation really but it was a drinkable beer.
Palate (3/5): Smooth and quite crisp, the beer was well carbonated but also quite light bodied with a sharp and very slightly dry finish; it was a little one dimensional though sadly but overall not a bad beer really.

Overall (11/20): This one was a fairly ordinary beer if I’m honest, a bit basic but still quite drinkable despite the fact there wasn’t much going on beyond a few grassy hops, some adjuncts and a touch of citrus. It was fresh enough on the way down and the balance was decent but it was fairly run-of-the-mill with nothing in there to make me want to buy it again I’m afraid.
