Karlovačko Royal

Rating: 3.2

This one will be my fourth beer from the Karlovaċka brewery now and is another that I managed to pick up at a Zagreb supermarket and review whilst in Croatia last month. It’s one that I hadn’t spotted on my previous visit to Croatia as it looks like the beer was only launched in 2014, well after my last visit to the country. Brewed with two types of malts as well as Spalter Select hops, the pilsner was one I was quite keen to pick up after spotting it in Zagreb since Karlovaċko is one of the biggest names in Croatian beer and it’s be a shame not to try all I could from them, particularly since none of their beers make it to the UK.

Karlovacko Royal

Appearance (4/5): Medium amber in colour and quite a clear body, this one is topped with a finger-sized, foamy white head that holds fairly well over the opening couple of minute and leaves some lacing on the sides of the glass as well.
Aroma (6/10): There wasn’t a whole lot to the nose really, it started with some corn and bread before a few earthy malts made an appearance and a subtle hop aroma followed soon after. There was some grassy notes coming through with a faint citrus smell and the odd lager adjunct but it wasn’t a bad smelling beer in truth.
Taste (6/10): Grassy hops with some lighter malts start things off here, there’s some touches bitterness to and a little citrus from the nose again. I got some bread and corn adjuncts with hints of dough and a grainy taste to proceedings before some lager malts seen things out.
Palate (3/5): Light medium in body but not overly thin, the beer had some nice sweetness to it and a fairly crisp feel that was dry at the finish. It was also fairly smooth for the most part and this helped it come through as quite an easy one to drink at the same time.

Overall (12/20): This one came across as just another basic lager from Croatia I’m afraid, it was certainly drinkable and maybe even a touch better than I’d anticipated but at the same time it failed to catch my imagination or really grab me. It was an easy to drink lager with nothing in the way of off-flavours but I’m not sure it’s one I’d go hunting for in order to try it again.
