Reservoir Dogs Grim Reaper IPA

Rating: 4.05

Another Slovenian craft beer now and one that I managed to pick up based on a staff recommendation when I stopped in at the Pivoteka Za popen’t bottle shop on Ljubljana one afternoon when I was wandering about the city last month. The place had a surprisingly good selection of beers from around the world but I headed straight to the Slovenian corner and grabbed this one from the Reservoir Dogs brewery alongside a couple other beers from the country. Reservoir Dogs is another Slovenian brewery that I’d read a little about and along with Human Fish it is one of the breweries I was most looking forward to trying something from. This one is an American style IPA and my only hope going in was that it was actually true to the style and had at least some hops making an appearance, thankfully it didn’t let me down.

Reservoir Dogs Grim Reaper IPA

Appearance (4/5): A slightly cloudy caramel amber colour with a thin, foamy white head on top that more surface lacing than anything else but at least stops short of disappearing completely after that.
Aroma (8/10): This one starts with some subdued pine hops and a nice caramel base before some citrus and orange notes come through with a touch of grapefruit not far behind them. It was quite a fruity IPA on the nose with a good balance and some nice sweetness appearing from the middle on wards giving the beer a refreshing aroma that featured some faint mango and apricot towards the end.
Taste (8/10): Starting in a similar fashion to the nose, this one kicks off with a mix of pine and citrus hops with a helping of mango and grapefruit not far behind. There was some passion fruit and orange following that and the beer has quite a hoppy taste with some nice bitterness before some subtle caramel malts and sweetness made an appearance to see things out.
Palate (4/5): Quite a bitter beer to start thanks to the hops coming through on top of a medium body and strong carbonation. The beer was crisp and quite dry but stayed refreshing with a nice citrus tang and very subtle hints of alcohol in places. The balance was a good one and despite the alcohol showing the beer was still a very easy and enjoyable one to drink.

Overall (17/20): This one was an excellent American style IPA with a very nice taste that featured plenty of hops and bitterness with just enough alcohol showing through to give the beer a nice kick. I was very happy with this beer, it definitely ranks as best of the eleven Slovenian beers that I’ve rated thus far and is one that I wouldn’t mind picking up again; it was refreshing with a nice bitterness throughout but it remained easy very easy to drink and most importantly it was one that I enjoyed.
